 York Newborn Photography

N O W  P L A Y I N G : ‘How long will I love you’ by Askil Holm // When you bring home a newborn the time just evaporates. To where, I have absolutely no idea. Even if you’re leaning into slower days with fewer plans, it just ebbs away to somewhere. I can’t speak for anyone else, but there was a fair amount of pottering around in a sleep deprived haze and now we’re talking about secondary schools and there aren’t really any words for it.

Maybe it’s not the best sales pitch, but I always think there’s so much to think about when you’re expecting, that bringing in a newborn photographer doesn’t always make it to the top of the list, especially if it’s a first baby. Then they’re here and all of a sudden you can’t imagine that you won’t have pictures of it all.

A few weeks ago Jannine and Ben welcomed me into their gorgeous home to photograph Chloe. Her tiny hands and feet were just absolute joy. As parents, we take so many photographs – I’m here for every last iphone shot in an album of thousands. My feed is exactly the same. Yet there are some photos that are really hard to come by, and in my opinion are the best kind. Working with them was a reminder of how bringing in a newborn photographer in the early days can ensure you have these in your family album.

Here are the images I love to take during a newborn photography session…

There’s the one where you’re all in the frame. Even better, the one where you’re all in the frame but you’re involved in doing something, you’re not really looking at the camera. You’re certainly not stiff and posed.

Then there’s the photograph that puts some distance between you and the camera. Life isn’t always close up and our surrounding context is important. It’s where we are right now and it’s a big part of the story. Let’s make the space to see all of it.

The final shot I always love is the one with the imperfect movement. Maybe I’ll get in bother for saying this but I really don’t like the phrase ‘capture the moment.’ I don’t know why particularly, it’s probably an English teacher hangover, it just gives me the ick. But I can at least accept that the sentiment is right. Life isn’t always perfectly in focus, often the most beauty comes in movement. Bringing this into photography is one of my favourite things.

Next week on the blog I’ll be sharing a few more images and writing about demystifying newborn photography. I’ll talk you through how a session works and what to expect.
